4-H National Equine Presentations are a competition where you use your knowledge of horses to research a subject and present a speech. The subject of the presentation must pertain to the equine industry, and speeches not appropriately related to the equine industry can be disqualified.
As the name implies, this is a national competition held at the National Horse Park in Kentucky. Washington State’s contestants are chosen through a virtual competition held in early February. The full rules can be found here. Below are some of the rules highlights.
Participating in the State Qualifying event is an approved educational activity for the Pierce County Horse Department.

Eligibility
- Must be 14 years old prior to October 1st and cannot be 19 years old prior to October 1st.
- The age for competition at the Eastern National 4-H Roundup is: As of January 1, of the year in which the event is held (which is the year following the State contest.)
- Each county may enter up to four senior contestants: one for individual presentation, one for public speaking, and two for team presentation.
- All contestants must be enrolled 4-H members in their respective county for the current 4-H year, and must be in good standing.
- The Washington rules follow the rules of the “communications contest” for the Eastern National 4-H Round-up. Those rules can be found on the Eastern National 4-H Roundup website.
